Considering dental implants abroad?
What implants abroad really cost, the risks worth taking seriously, and the questions to ask before you book. A straight guide for patients from the US and Canada, from a clinic in Albania.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Idlir Sinani, DDS, implant dentist at Toronto Dental, Tirana. Last reviewed: October 2026.
About
Every year, thousands of people in the US and Canada look into getting dental implants abroad. Most aren’t chasing the cheapest price they can find. They’ve been handed a quote at home for $15,000, $30,000 or more, and they want to know if there’s a safe way to have the same work done for less.
We’re a dental clinic in Tirana, so we’re not neutral on this. But we’ve been treating patients who travel to us since 2012, and we’d rather you arrived fully informed than arrived with the wrong idea. This page covers what implants abroad cost once you add the trip, which risks are real, and the questions you should put to any clinic overseas, including us.
Is implant treatment actually cheaper abroad?
Usually, yes. In the US, a single implant with its abutment and crown is commonly quoted at $3,000 to $5,0002, and full-arch treatment such as All-on-4 can pass $20,000 per jaw. In Albania the same treatment, with the same implant systems, costs a fraction of that. At Toronto Dental a single implant with a zirconia crown starts from 500 Euros.
The price difference isn’t down to cutting corners. Rent, wages, lab fees and insurance all cost far less in Tirana than in Toronto or New York. The implants and ceramics we use come from the same international manufacturers that supply clinics in North America.
What the treatment price doesn't include
- Return flights, and most implant cases need two trips
- Time off work for each trip, and any lost earnings if you need extra days
- A hotel or apartment while you're in treatment
- Food and day-to-day costs while you're away
- Airport parking, or getting to and from the airport at home
- Travel insurance
- Taxis in Albania (Tirana airport is about 25 minutes from our clinic)
Add these up honestly before you decide. For one or two implants, the saving can be modest once you’ve paid for two return flights. For four or more implants, a set of crowns or full-arch treatment, most of our patients still save many thousands of dollars after travel. The calculator below lets you check your own numbers.
One trip or two?
Most implant treatment takes two visits. On the first, the implant is placed and you go home with a temporary tooth. The bone then needs three to six months to fuse with the implant before the final crown can go on. That second visit is usually a little longer, because the crown is made, tried in and adjusted while you’re here. If you have enough healthy bone, some cases can be loaded the same week, but that’s something Dr. Sinani decides after seeing your scan, not something we promise in advance.
Work out your real saving
Put in the quote from your dentist at home and the quote we send you. The travel figures are rough starting points, so change them to match your own trip. You’ll see what the whole thing costs, not just the treatment.
The travel figures are only starting points. Change them to match your own flights and plans. This doesn't include time off work.
Don’t have our quote yet? Send us your X-ray and we’ll reply with a written plan and price. We don’t charge for this.
Risks of having dental treatment abroad
The biggest risk with an implant, at home or abroad, is what happens if something goes wrong. Abroad, that question matters more, because you’ll be thousands of miles from the person who did the work. Here’s how each risk works, and what we do about it.
Regulation
Dentistry isn’t regulated the same way everywhere. In the US it’s the state dental boards. In Canada it’s the provincial colleges, such as the RCDSO in Ontario. None of them can investigate work done in another country.
In Albania, every dentist must be licensed by the Order of Dentists of Albania (Urdhri i Stomatologëve të Shqipërisë), and clinics are registered with the Ministry of Health. Ask any clinic abroad for its license details and check them. We’ll send ours on request.
Because complaining across borders is slow and hard, your real protection is paperwork you get before you travel: a written treatment plan, a written guarantee and a clinic that deals with problems directly. We give you all three in writing before you book.
Complications following treatment
Most problems with implants show up in the first few weeks: an infection, a loose healing cap, sore gums. A smaller number appear years later. Treatment abroad makes the second group harder, because your dentist at home may not recognize the implant system, may not stock the parts, or may simply not want to touch someone else’s work.
That’s why we use implant systems that are sold and supported in North America, such as Hiossen and MegaGen. Every patient leaves with an implant record card listing the brand, model, size and position of each implant, so any dentist at home can order the right parts. If an implant fails within our guarantee period, we replace it at no charge for the treatment.
Medical history and consultations
A clinic that books you in for surgery without seeing a scan of your jaw is a clinic to avoid. Before you travel, we ask for a recent panoramic X-ray (OPG) or a CBCT scan, photos of your teeth and your medical history, including medicines such as blood thinners or bisphosphonates. Dr. Sinani reviews them himself and goes through the plan with you on a video call.
Ask your own dentist for copies of your records and X-rays before you go. When you leave us, you’ll take home a full report and copies of every scan to give to your regular dentist, so they know exactly what was done.

Questions to ask before having implants abroad
Whether you come to us or go somewhere else, ask these before you agree to a treatment plan. A good clinic should be happy to answer every one of them in writing. Here are our answers.
What exactly does my treatment plan involve, and how many appointments will I need?
You’ll get a written plan that lists every procedure, every tooth, the materials and the number of visits. Most single implants take two trips: around 4 to 5 days for placement, then 5 to 7 days three to six months later for the final crown.
What brand of implants do you use?
Mainly Hiossen and MegaGen, with ETK for some cases. All are established systems with parts available in North America. The exact brand and model go on your implant record card.
Are you regulated by or registered with a recognized professional body?
Yes. Our dentists are licensed by the Order of Dentists of Albania and the clinic is registered with the Albanian Ministry of Health. We’ll send license details on request.
Do you have insurance to cover the procedure?
[EDIT: confirm and describe the clinic’s professional liability insurance]
What happens if there's a serious problem and follow-up work is needed?
Message us on WhatsApp first. If you’re still in Albania, we’ll see you the same day. If you’re home, we’ll speak to your local dentist and agree the next step. Corrective work covered by the guarantee is done at no charge for the treatment.
Who will be doing my procedure, and what qualifications do they have?
Implant surgery is done by Dr. Idlir Sinani, DDS, whose work covers implantology, prosthetics, periodontology and aesthetic dentistry. You can check his license through the Order of Dentists of Albania.
Does the surgical team speak English? If not, is a translator provided?
Yes. Dr. Sinani and the team speak English, and he’s also fluent in Italian. You won’t need a translator.
Can I see references from previous patients?
You can read our Google reviews and see real cases in our smile gallery. Where past patients have agreed to it, we can also put you in touch with them.
How many times have you carried out the procedure?
[EDIT: number] implants placed since 2012.
How often do your patients experience complications and infection?
Large studies put implant survival at around 95% or higher after ten years1. Most problems we see are early infections that settle with treatment. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes raise the risk, which is why we ask about both before we plan anything. Ask Dr. Sinani about his own numbers at your consultation.
Do you offer a guarantee following the treatment?
Yes, in writing. [EDIT: X] years on implants and [EDIT: X] years on crowns and bridges, as long as you keep up regular check-ups and cleanings.
What aftercare do you provide?
We check everything before you fly home, give you written care instructions and follow up by video call. Between trips, you can message us any time.
What happens if I'm unhappy with the results?
You see and approve the shape and shade of your final crowns before they’re fixed in. While you’re in Tirana, adjustments are free.
If there are complications and I need more treatment, is this included in the original cost?
Treatment covered by the guarantee is included. Flights and hotels for any extra trip aren’t. [EDIT: confirm this matches your policy]
Who can I contact for advice after the treatment?
Our team on WhatsApp at +355 69 787 2194, or by email through our contact page.
Will you send details about the procedure to my dentist at home?
Yes. With your permission we send a full report, the implant details and copies of your scans to your dentist in the US or Canada.
