The best dental cleaning in Tirana for expats

Not sure which dental clinic to choose for your next cleaning? If you’re an expat living in Tirana and looking for reliable, high-quality dental care, Toronto Dental is an ideal choice.

We have served the international community in Tirana for more than 12 years, so we understand what expats need and expect from a dentist abroad. We combine expertise, modern technology and a real commitment to personal care, so you get the same standard of treatment you’d expect at home.

Why get your teeth cleaned twice a year?

Plaque forms when saliva, bacteria and sugar combine, usually after you eat. It’s a soft, sticky bacterial film that collects between the teeth and along the gumline. The bacteria in plaque can cause cavities, bad breath and bleeding gums.

What is tartar? If plaque isn’t removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens. Within 5 to 7 days it becomes tartar, a mineralized layer that sticks to the enamel and under the gums. Tartar can’t be removed with a toothbrush or floss, which is why dentists recommend a professional cleaning every six months, using special instruments to remove both tartar and plaque.

How are teeth cleaned at the dentist?

Two types of instruments are used: ultrasonic scalers and hand scalers.

Ultrasonic scalers vibrate the tip of a fine instrument at a specific frequency, which breaks tartar off the surface of the enamel. Different tips are used for different teeth, and all ultrasonic scalers spray water while they work so the tooth doesn’t heat up. Quality matters: high-end machines remove tartar more effectively without damaging the enamel, while cheaper, poorly tested machines can be up to 10 times less effective.

Hand scalers remove the finest remaining layers of tartar by hand, which ultrasonic scalers alone can’t always reach. Using them well takes years of training. At Toronto Dental, a specialist dental hygienist trained in both methods performs your cleaning.

Regular cleaning or deep cleaning?

Regular cleaning

Removes plaque and tartar from the teeth and just below the gumline. Recommended every six months to prevent cavities, bad breath and gum problems. If you wear braces or have dental implants, regular cleaning matters even more, because plaque collects easily around brackets and implants.

Deep cleaning (root planing)

Needed when you have gum (periodontal) disease, which is mainly caused by tartar left under the gums. Bleeding gums, sensitive teeth and loose teeth are warning signs.

What is a deep cleaning?

Deep cleaning, or root planing, removes tartar from under the gums. It usually takes several appointments and is done by a specialist. Once it’s complete, the gums return to normal, the bleeding stops and loose teeth become firmer. Depending on how advanced the gum disease is, further treatment may be needed.

Over the last ten years we have successfully treated many different cases of periodontal disease, and patients rate us as one of the top dental clinics in Albania for gum treatment.
